Hello to you all!
My name is Arianne Carrillo and I am a young peruvian girl eager to begin my studies at Parsons The New School for Design. I have been accepted to begin in the fall of 2014, with fashion design as my career choice. As you may infer, the term 'The Parsonian' is a word that I derived from the name of my college, however, I define it as a byname that expresses my intentions to create a social media platform to share my experience as a college student living in New York City. Given that I believe it is important to explore and broaden ones horizons to enhance ones identity, my purpose for creating this blog it to share with you my findings as I find pleasure in communicating my learnings.
To expand a bit on who I am as an individual, I would like to begin by saying that since I was a little girl, what I enjoyed the most was meeting people. Hearing their stories, the way they speak their language and getting to know more about them as a person fascinated me. As I grew older I became curious to understand how the background of a human being can shape their identity and how that influences their pursuit to define themselves. That being said, here is a little story about myself.
On July 05, 1995 I was born in the capital of Peru to a loving family: a mom, dad and cute little boy who was one year older than me. As a country, Peru offered me a wide diversity of food, a kind and enthusiastic society, and a rich history of creative thoughts and constructions. My interaction with this surrounding grew as I began to develop my hobbies, activities and explore the different ways of enjoying life in this country. One key lesson that I learned from my family was understanding that communication is a vital factor for life. Through conversations with old, young and people of various ages, I noticed that communication is 'the fountain of cultural learning'. Therefore, I would challenge myself to become part of various activities as this would allow me to be in contact with many types of people. As I come from a country where creativity is limitless, food, clothes, art, music, dances, architectural designs and even the language is continuously evolving due to the passion that drives latin americans to enjoy life each and every second. In my particular case, I have always found a love for clothes as my mother's career surrounded my home with fabric, needles and threats since the age of zero. Being surrounded by the process of creating clothes, I was able to meet many clients, and be a spectator of how ones personality determines how they dress their identity. Clothes are a form of communication which speak through symbols such as color, length, occasion, accessories, and other factors which all together create a piece of clothing. As I grew older, I began to design clothes and eventually make them. Being the creator made me feel powerful and grow a passion for clothing. Therefore, at the age of 16 I began my IB Diploma at School in which in the course, Art HL, I built a portfolio to present to Parsons in November 2013. On the morning on December 15 2013 the letter arrived to my home offering me a position at this college. Since I was four, living in New York was my dream, and now it will be a reality.
So well you might think what drove me to create a journal of my life at Parsons… and that it goes back again to the idea of communication. I am eager to learn a lot of the people in New York as well as the cosmopolitan culture that lives in the city.
XOXO,
The Parsonian
